Spin Battery - Store Energy in Magnet ?

Display problem ? Click HERE

spin battery”, a battery that is "charged" by applying a large magnetic field to nano-magnets in magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ). This technology is basically store energy in magnets and potentially lead to creation of computer hard drives with no moving parts and new battery for power cars. A team lead by Physicist Stewart E. Barnes and and his collaborators.

The secret behind this technology is the use of nano-magnets to induce an electromotive force. It uses the same principles as those in a conventional battery, except in a more direct fashion. The energy stored in a battery, be it in an iPod or an electric car, is in the form of chemical energy. When something is turned "on" there is a chemical reaction which occurs and produces an electric current. The new technology converts the magnetic energy directly into electrical energy, without a chemical reaction. The electrical current made in this process is called a spin polarized current and finds use in a new technology called "spintronics.”

Green Energy : Heat to Electricity

Display problem ? Click HERE

Energy has became one the daily need for human and society. This has lead to many research and developments programs to find and explore new energy sources. Solar cell is one of the product to convert solar (light) energy into electricity and nowadays this technology has been applied in many area i.e. power for satellite, power for parking machine, etc.

Further research and improvement has lead to a new technology called Thermo photovoltaics, invented by Researcher in MIT,. This technology converts heat into light and then into electricity.

Solar Cell : Light --> Electric
Thermophotovaltaics : Heat -->Light --> Electricity

Overall maximum theoretical conversion efficiency of a conventional solar cell is about 30 percent, or 41 percent if the sunlight is first concentrated using a mirror or lens as solar cell selectively convert certain color efficiently. Thermo photovoltaic will concentrate light to heat -up material, then this material will emits light with wavelengths that allow solar cell to convert efficiently. Overall maximum theoretical conversion efficiency of Thermo photovoltaic can be increased upto 85 percent.

This believe to be excellence choice for oil and gas industry as there are many facilities emitting hot waste gases such as gas turbine generator, compressor turbine, fire heater, etc. Besides, this may also great for the car exhaust gas.

Alternative Power Source For Subsea Installation

Display problem ? Click HERE

Depletion in oil and gas reservoir and reduction in shallow water reservoir has driven Oil and Gas Exploration move from shallow water (less than 100m water depth) exploration to depth water exploration. Depth water exploration would required the used of subsea wellhead, subsea collection manifold, Remotely-Operated Vehicle (ROV), flexible flowline, Floating Production and Storage Unit (FPSO), Floating Liquefaction Natural Gas unit (FLNG), etc.

There are minimum power driven equipment in subsea installation as subsea power generation is still under research level. One of the recent development is to convert the seawater current into power with a special device, named VIVACE (Vortex-Induced Vibrations for Aquatic Clean Energy). VIVACE is utilizing a fluid movement phenomena called vortex-induced vibrations (VIV).

Fluid flow around a rounded or cylinder-shaped object, vortices or eddies will form on opposite sides of the rounded or cylinder-shaped object. As alternating vortices form above and below the rounded or cylinder-shaped object, exerting force perpendicular by the flow will drive the rounded or cylinder-shaped object to move. As the rounded or cylinder-shaped object cylinder is attach to a springs, counter force would cause it oscillates and convert mechanical energy to electricity. This technology is being commercialized by Vortex Hydro Energy and a paper on "VIVACE - A new concept in generation of clean and renewable energy from fluid flow" is published in Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering.

Below are some demonstrations clips...

VIVACE converter model operating in the Low-turbulence Free Surface Re-circulating Water Tunnel
Flow Speed: 1.6 knots (0.823 m/s)

This technology could be considered in subsea power generation and possibly leads to employment of motor driven equipment in subsea installation.

Power in Human Cell Size Micro Battery

Display problem ? Click HERE

Team led by associate director, Shuguang Zhang managed to use the energy generated by trees to power a network of wireless sensors (-Tree Power-), Professor Zhong Lin, Wang research group managed to generate power from Fabric (-Fabric Generate Power Caught Global Interests...-), and now MIT engineers led by professors Yet-Ming Chiang have developed a way to create and install tiny microbatteries, about half the size of a human cell and built with viruses which could one day power a range of miniature devices, from labs-on-a-chip to implantable medical sensors -- by stamping them onto a variety of surfaces.

In the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) the week of Aug. 18, the team describes assembling and successfully testing two of the three key components of a battery. A complete battery is on its way.

"To our knowledge, this is the first instance in which microcontact printing has been used to fabricate and position microbattery electrodes and the first use of virus-based assembly in such a process," wrote MIT professors Paula T. Hammond, Angela M. Belcher, Yet-Ming Chiang and colleagues. Read more in MIT Tech Talk.

Tree Power

Display problem ? Click HERE

A group of researchers with team member Andreas Mershin, a postdoctoral associate at the CBE and Christopher Love, an MIT senior in chemistry, led by Shuguang Zhang, the associate director of the MIT's Center for Biomedical Engineering (CBE) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has managed to use the energy generated by trees to power a network of wireless sensors to prevent spreading forest fires. These sensors are powered by off-the-shelf batteries which is rechargeable by electricity generated by the trees.

Although the power generated by tree is small, it sufficient to produces enough electricity to enable four time signals emission a day from the system. This obviously a break through in power industrial where human being is still struggling with. It is believed the tree power may be adopted to be utilized in other wireless applications. Optimized Gas Treating, Inc. (OGT) - Experts in CO2-Amine

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is known as one of industrial waste gas causing global warming...there are number of measures are implemented to reduce global warming. CO2 reduction measures are CO2 capturing, reinjection into aquifer, injection into reservior for well maintenance, gas injection for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), etc.

Above efforts will reduce CO2 release into atmosphere. However, recycling CO2 will increase quantity of CO2 in oil and result serious corrosion problem. Hence it needs to be removed from the flashed gas (from unstabilised oil). CO2 removal technology using amine absorption has been used for many years. Recently i found a website (OGT) where the founders, Ralph Weiland and Jack Dingman are those experts in this technology.

Optimized Gas Treating, Inc. (OGT) was established in 1992 by Ralph Weiland and Jack Dingman for the single purpose of providing a commercial version of a Windows-based software package for simulating acid gas removal with aqueous alkanolamines that uses a fundamental mass and heat transfer rate approach to column modeling. ProTreat™ is the culmination of more than 30 years of research in gas treating supported by government and industry in both academic and commercial environments. ProTreat is our sole product. Consequently, it receives our undivided attention in maintaining and enhancing its capabilities so that it remains the premier software package for gas treating with amines. OGT’s principals are recognized world experts in most aspects of gas treating — they offer a total of nearly 60 years of relevant experience.
